The news of Sydel’s demise provoked deep emotion among African anthropologists who came to know her closely. It was thanks to her intellectual and academic support that the Pan African Anthropological Association (PAAA) was created and has survived despite the enormous problems faced by African and Africanist anthropologists across the continent.
The Pan African Anthropological Association (PAAA) has learned with deep regret the arrest and sentencing of Prof. Stella Nyanzi. She has been accused and charged with “Cyber Harassment” and “Offensive Communication”. We are indeed flabbergasted by the accusation and sentencing and call on the Ugandan Authorities to release her.
The Pan African Anthropological Association (PAAA) notes with deep concern the arrest in Iran of Professor Fariba Adelkhah. We of the PAAA considers this arrest as an infringement of fundamental human rights, notably the right to freely exercise an academic profession. The PAAA requests that Professor Adelkhah, who is of French nationality, be given access to the French diplomatic missions, and that all her rights under international law be fully respected or restored.”
